Sony has changed its long-standing policy regarding cross-play, stating that it now fully supports the feature.
Speaking in an interview with Axios, Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that the company wants to see cross-play included in more games in the future.
According to Ryan, Sony will continue to allow cross-platform multiplayer on its consoles in the future and will encourage developers to include it in more titles.
During the interview, Ryan said: “We support and encourage cross-play”, no cross-platform functionality on PlayStation for titles like Fortnite, Call of Duty, Rocket League, Minecraft and others. He also noted the “number [of cross-play games] will continue to grow “.
Sony was the last of the big three game console manufacturers to allow cross-play on its systems, with Microsoft and Nintendo being the first to adopt the feature. The first PS4 cross-play games appeared in 2018 but many developers pointed out that Sony still makes it difficult to enable cross-play on PlayStation consoles.
For example, last month, Gearbox announced that Borderlands 3 would receive support for cross-play on all platforms except PlayStation.
Additionally, court documents from the Epic-Apple trial revealed Sony’s deal to allow cross-play for Fortnite. In exchange for cross-play support, they receive reduced revenue from players who play primarily on PlayStation but purchase in-game items on other platforms.
