We subjected the POCO F5 Pro to our rigorous SBMARK audio test suite to measure its performance both when recording sound using its built-in microphones, and when playing audio through its speakers.
In this review, we’ll analyze how it performed in a variety of tests and several common use cases.

In SBMARK Audio tests, the Poco F5 Pro delivered a performance that failed to set it apart in its device class. The Poco did better for recording than playback, thanks to overall pleasant audio recordings with a nice timbre. Recorded audio arrived with natural tonal balance and very few unwanted artifacts, but the overall quality suffered somewhat at higher sound pressure levels. Overall recording results were better with the front camera app and slightly worse for reminder use and with the main camera.
In playback our experts noted a severe lack of bass with the built-in speakers and an aggressive sound at higher volume settings. In playback, the Poco performed better when gaming and scored slightly lower when watching movies or listening to music.

SBMARK engineers test playback through smartphone speakers, the performance of which is evaluated in our labs and under real-life conditions, using apps and preset settings.
Playback performance wasn’t among the best in class. In our tests, the Poco F5 Pro delivered only average results for Timbre, due to a tonal balance focused on the overall midrange, with rather unappealing highs and a lack of midrange and low bass. In terms of dynamics, the Poco offered quite a sharp and precise attack and a satisfying punch. However, bass accuracy was compromised by a lack of low-end extension. The built-in speakers managed to create quite good width, but the stereo spread sounded slightly uneven, resulting in an unrealistic sound stage with some dead zones around the center of the stereo image. This also affected the localizability of individual sound sources which were blurred around the center or with narrow sound diffused towards the sides of the stereo image. The sound stage also lacked depth, but our experts found the distance rendering realistic.
Volume performance was disappointing, with average volume at maximum volume at best. At the lowest volume the device was too quiet and the volume step distribution was inconsistent. Additionally, our experts observed a number of unwanted audio artifacts, including a slight fade in or out when pressing play/pause in the music app, some compression at maximum volume, and severe distortion when playing games. While playing, our testers also found that the bottom speaker was easily occluded, which compromised tonal balance.

The Timbre score represents how well a phone reproduces sound across the audible tonal range and takes into account bass, mids, treble, tonal balance, and volume dependency. It is the most important attribute for reproduction.

The Dynamics Score measures the accuracy of changes in the energy level of sound sources, such as how accurately a bass note or impact sound of drums is played.
Secondary attributes for spatial testing include pinpointing the location of a specific sound, its positional balance, distance, and amplitude.
The volume score represents the overall volume of a smartphone and how smoothly the volume increases and decreases based on user input.

The artifact score measures the extent to which the sound is affected by various types of distortion. The higher the score, the less noticeable sound disturbances are. Distortion can occur due to the sound processing in the device and the quality of the speakers.

It represents the distortion and noise of the device playing our test signal (0 dB Fs, Sweep Sine in an anechoic box at 40cm) at the device’s maximum volume.
SBMARK engineers test recording by evaluating recorded files on reference audio equipment. These recordings are made in our laboratories and under real-life conditions, using apps and default settings.
The Poco did better as a recording device, performing decently in the Timbre category. The recordings sounded slightly unclear, or even muffled on occasion, but the tonal balance was natural enough, with a good amount of upper bass and lower midrange body. In terms of dynamics, the device provided a decent envelope rendering and an average signal-to-noise ratio, with some noticeable noise floor. When recording in landscape orientation, for example with the main camera app, the Poco captured a wide sound scene. However, the localizability of individual sound sources could have been better and was a bit blurry. Both range and locateability were less realistic when recording selfie video in portrait orientation, but our testers liked the great distance rendition.
Recording volume was slightly disappointing in all use cases, but improved slightly at higher sound pressure levels, such as when recording concerts. Under these challenging conditions recordings were virtually distortion-free, but our testers did note some compression. In our tests, the device wasn’t particularly prone to microphone occlusions, but finger noises in recordings could be an issue. The tonal balance of the background was natural.

The Timbre Score represents how well a phone captures sounds across the audible tonal range and takes into account bass, mids, treble, and tonal balance. It is the most important attribute for registration.
