Learn about SBMARK visualization tests: For scoring and analysis in our smartphone and other display reviews, SBMARK engineers perform a series of objective and perceptual tests in controlled laboratory and under real-life conditions. This article highlights the most important results of our tests. Please note that we evaluate display attributes using only the device’s built-in display hardware and related still image (gallery) and video apps with default settings. Test summary

Pros

  • Good color rendering in most conditions tested, both in axis and in corner
  • Excellent uniformity of color and brightness
  • Readable in low light conditions and indoors, with brightness adapted to the time of day
  • Smooth while browsing and in the gallery app

Cons

  • In HDR10 videos, very saturated colors and barely noticeable dark tones
  • Lack of fluency when playing video games
  • Aliasing visible during gameplay

The Oppo Find X5 Pro’s overall score of 95 reflects its excellent performance in most SBMARK Display protocol tests. It is suitable for general use indoors and in low light conditions, thanks to good color fidelity and good legibility. However, it is not comfortable for watching HDR10 videos, as its colors are too saturated and dark tones are not visible.

Analysis and comparisons

An overall SBMARK display score of 95 for the Oppo Find X5 Pro comes from its scores in six attributes: readability, color, video, motion, touch, and artifacts. In this section, we will take a closer look at these display quality sub-scores and explain what they mean to the user, and compare the Oppo device with three of its rivals, OnePlus 9 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Exynos) and the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max.

SBMARK uses the device gallery app to show static content (still image) while measuring the device display for brightness, contrast, gamma and impact of blue light, etc.

The Oppo Find X5 Pro generally has excellent readability, with particularly appropriate brightness levels in low light and indoor lighting conditions, as well as smooth adaptation to varying lighting conditions; in addition, it adapts its brightness to the time of day. The Oppo device has a uniform brightness and remains legible when viewed from an angle.

The comparison charts below show the Oppo’s performance Cons the competition at 0 lux (low light) and 30,000 lux (wide daylight):

The Find X5 Pro’s brightness is suitable for low-light conditions during the day, but is slightly low at night.

In outdoor conditions, however, the Oppo device lacks a bit of brightness, especially in sunlight.

With the blue light filter activated, the Find X5 Pro’s brightness is low and takes on a noticeable orange cast.

SBMARK uses the device gallery app to show static content (still image) when measuring the device display for white point, gamma, uniformity, color fidelity and impact of blue light filter, etc.

The Oppo Find X5 Pro offers very high performance for color. It can adapt its white point to the ambient lighting, although this feature is not activated by default.

The device has good overall color fidelity under indoor conditions.

The graphs below show the measured color fidelity of the Oppo Find X5 Pro in the RGB and P3 color spaces at 1000 lux. The farther the tip of an arrow is outside the circle, the more noticeable is the difference between the color rendering of the device and the original material. The Oppo has good color fidelity in the P3 space, but not nearly as good in the RGB color space in the device’s default Vivid color mode.

The graphs below show the color trends of the Oppo when held at an angle. Each point represents a measurement taken at a discrete angle and distance from the device. The points inside the inner circle show no color change in the corner; those between the inner and outer circle have shifts that only trained experts will see; but those that fall outside the outer circle are easily seen. Colors hardly change when the device is viewed in a corner, making it easy for users to show screen content to friends watching.

SBMARK uses your device’s video (or gallery) app to show dynamic content while measuring your device’s display for brightness, contrast, gamma and color.

The Oppo Find X5 Pro’s overall score was negatively impacted by its disappointing video score, where its brightness is low for HDR10 content. HDR10 videos on the display are too contrasty and dark tones are not visible.

But the color rendition of the Find X5 Pro video is arguably more problematic, with oversaturated colors and a visible reddish cast (especially on darker tones) degrading color fidelity.

The Oppo device shows some frame mismatches when playing content at 30fps and 60fps, but no frame discrepancies are visible when playing video games. Handles motion blur well. Find X5 Pro exhibits a delay and sometimes a small rollback before resuming video playback.

The Oppo Find X5 Pro is accurate when zooming in on the gallery app, even if the zoom is limited. The screen reacts accurately and the angles are tangible when playing video games. While the device runs smoothly when browsing the web and in the Gallery app, it lacks fluency when playing video games.

The Oppo Find X5 Pro exhibits some vibration when playing 24fps content, although no vibration is visible for 30fps and 60fps content. With a PWM measured at 359 Hz, flicker is barely noticeable; however, the Oppo falls behind the Honor Magic4 Ultimate, our current flagship OLED flicker control device. During testing, our engineers did not notice any response to accidental touches on the screen. However, the device is not optimal for gaming, as aliasing is visible and lacks fluidity when playing video games.
