Many years ago Xiaomi unveiled a tablet that could optionally run Windows. However, it wasn’t until today that the company unveiled its first Windows-powered 2-in-1 convertible. It is a 12.4 inch tablet with an optional keyboard that can turn it into an ultra portable laptop.

XiaomiBook S 12.4 “is powered by Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2, a 7nm chipset of the Snapdragon 865 generation. At the time Qualcomm compared it by saying that with a TDP of 7 W it is faster than a 10th generation Intel Core i5 from 15 W.

Anyway, this whiteboard runs Windows 11, which includes x86-64 emulation so you can run non-native PC software for ARM (Windows 10 can only run 32-bit x86 emulation).

The 12.4 “LCD display has a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 px (244ppi, 16:10, 60 Hz) and 100% DCI-P3 coverage. It promises 500 nits of brightness at full blast. The tablet body is Made of an aluminum-magnesium alloy, it measures 8.95mm thick and weighs just 720g. The front is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.

For connectivity, you get a USB-C port, which can drive an external 4K display and perform normal charging functions. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack on board, as well as a microSD slot for expanding storage. Speaking of which, the Snapdragon chipset is paired with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of storage.

Wireless connectivity features include Wi-Fi 5 (ac) and Bluetooth 5.1. There is no option for cellular connectivity, at least not on the version it is launching in Europe. So you may need to run a Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone if you need to join a Zoom on the go call. The 1080p front-facing camera will come in handy for this, it’s flanked by two microphones using Qualcomm’s Aqstic echo cancellation and noise suppression technology. Also, there are stereo speakers on the sides.

Battery capacity isn’t listed, but the tablet will provide 13.4 hours of regular use, according to official numbers. Charging is fast thanks to the 65W GaN charger, which is normally sold separately.

The XiaomiBook S 12.4 ”has a normal price of 700 €. Pre-orders will start on June 30th and during the first 48 hours the price will be reduced to € 600. As an added bonus, the 65W charger – normally € 40 – will be included for free during the first two days.

And while you can use it as a tablet, it gets a lot better with the keyboard cover. It’s a full-size keyboard with 1.3mm key travel, plus a touchpad. The exterior is made of PU leather and there is an integrated kickstand to support the tablet. The keyboard cover attaches to the tablet via pogo pin and adds 317g of weight.

An additional accessory that you can buy for your XiaomiBook is the Smart Pen. The display tracks the stylus at a sampling rate of 240Hz and can discern 4,096 levels of pressure. The stylus is battery powered, but a full charge only takes 18 minutes and if you really can’t wait that long, a 1 minute charge will give you 20 minutes of use.
