Microsoft has released an updated version of the Xbox app for PC, which includes numerous changes and quality of life improvements. One of the new additions is Compact Mode, designed with the new wave of portable gaming PCs in mind.

Compact mode enables a collapsible side menu, allowing you to minimize it so only the icons are visible. This frees up much-needed space on these small screen devices.

Unfortunately, when enabled, you lose direct access to installed games via the sidebar and need to be accessed by going to the My Library section. Additionally, the option to enable compact mode is a bit buried in the drop-down menu enabled by clicking your profile icon in the top left menu rather than just a button directly on the screen somewhere.

Microsoft says it’s working with manufacturers like ASUS to enable the new compact mode by default on portable devices like ROG Ally.

Other changes to the app include updates to the notifications section, where you can now only see unread notifications instead of all of them. A new Game Service Repair tool has been added to fix any issues with Game Service or missing content when launching the Xbox app.

The updated Xbox app for PC is now available for download via the Microsoft Store and available on Windows 10 and 11.
