The power structure within Xiaomi’s flagship line has changed: in a survey last year the Xiaomi 13 Pro was the most popular model compared to its vanilla sibling. Fast forward to last week’s survey and you’ll find that more people are looking at the standard Xiaomi 14 than the Pro.

Either way, reviews will be a major deciding factor: People are especially curious about the new HyperOS that comes to replace the solid MIUI, which has been around since before Xiaomi started making phones. This is an important change since MIUI has many critics and HyperOS is an opportunity to conquer them.

Pricing is another big concern – we can only imagine how much these 14 Series will cost outside of China. In fact, this is a key factor that has pushed the smaller Xiaomi 14 above its bigger brother. As we noted in last week’s post, the two phones have nearly identical specs when you factor in size. Why pay extra for the Xiaomi 14 Pro?

To have a bigger screen, of course, but some find it too big and others aren’t fans of its curved shape. Maybe making the two models so similar was a mistake. Last year, the Pro phone stood out with a better camera and an LTPO screen. This year the camera is almost the same (only the variable aperture is missing) and both displays are LTPO panels.

So unless you really want a big phone, the vanilla model seems to be the best choice. For both to succeed, HyperOS will have to prove its worth – it has a big role to fill as MIUI has helped the company grow. And judging by all the complaints in the comments about it, it’s now holding the company back. Change is positive.
