The time of LCD in the world of smartphones is almost over: the vast majority in last week’s poll prefer AMOLED. But any old AMOLED won’t work, here’s what most people consider to be the perfect display.

Weekly poll results: Flat AMOLED displays with high refresh rates are strongly preferred

There is a fairly even split between FHD + and QHD + resolutions. Some like the extra sharpness of the QHD +, others think anything compared to FHD + is a waste of battery (battery life considerations have surfaced quite often).

That “+” in resolution names came about when phone makers ditched the standard 16: 9 aspect ratio. There have been surprisingly many commentators who have expressed a preference for aspect ratio – we’ve seen all the support for everything from old-school 16: 9 to Sony’s 21: 9 phone fans.

A high refresh rate is now essential. Most prefer 120Hz, which is the sweet spot (144Hz is seen as overkill). A quarter of voters would be fine with 90Hz too, anything that has been above the standard 60Hz for years now.

There were also those in the comments who argued that the extra smoothness isn’t worth the increased power draw. Not a problem as all HRR display phones have an option to lock them to 60Hz when you need to extend battery life.

The next is simple: Most people prefer a flat display for its convenience, but a small group appreciates curved displays. This is certainly not a case of “newer is better”, however.

Finally, the additional features. Two options nearly died even with 25% and a few votes: HDR support and tempered glass. Considering the rise in smartphone prices over the past few years, we’re not surprised to see people want a durable phone that won’t have to be replaced for years.

As for HDR, it is a sign of how many people consume multimedia content on their phone. HDR has a big impact on picture quality, possibly even higher than resolution (especially for screen sizes in the 6-7 inch range).

Among other things, HDR has requirements on screen brightness. And that was another thing that came up in the comments – people are asking for bright displays that provide excellent readability in bright sunlight.

Compared to a similar survey we conducted a year ago, the importance of QHD + has increased, although it is still behind the FHD +. The percentage of people who are still comfortable with 60Hz displays has decreased, while the popularity of curved displays has decreased.
