Motorola launched the first phone with a 200MP camera last week, the Edge 30 Ultra. For € 900 this flagship offers excellent value for money, even in addition to the large 1 / 1.22 ”ultra-high resolution sensor.

You get a 6.67 “curved AMOLED display with 144Hz refresh rate and FHD + resolution (it’s a 10-bit panel with HDR10 + support but relatively old Gorilla Glass 5). The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 8+ chipset Gen 1 (with 8/128 GB of base memory and options up to 12/512 GB) and a 4,610 mAh battery with 125W wired and 50W wireless charging.

You can check out our hands-on review of the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra to get a sneak peek at what the phone is capable of. We have camera samples, yes, even 200MP.

Not that you’ll be shooting many 200MP shots, this sensor is really meant to be used with 16-to-1 or 4-to-1 binning to get 12.5MP (with 2.56µm effective pixels) or 50 images MP (1.28 µm). The 50MP ultrawide camera can also hold up to 12.5MP by default (4 to 1), the 60MP selfie camera also offers binning.

Telephoto is the odd one: a basic 12MP sensor behind a basic 2x lens. We suspect we can get 2x better images from the main camera, this should have been at least 3x. The telephoto lens deserves its paragraph as it will emerge when looking at the competition. The only other thing we can anchor points for is the relatively short software support period – the phone boots with Android 12 and is unlikely to see Android 15.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra can be found north of € 1,000 (for an 8/128 GB unit) and while its AMOLED display refreshes at “only” 120 Hz, it is a more efficient LTPO panel. More importantly, it will receive 4 OS updates and has two telephoto lenses: one with a 3x lens and a periscope with 10x magnification. Now this gives you peak zoom. The main camera isn’t bad either, a 1 / 1.33-inch 108MP sensor with 9 to 1 binning. Charging speed is better not to be mentioned, however.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra will unfortunately not be launched outside of China, so it is not a competitor. Xiaomi 12S Pro is expected to go global, however, and should cost roughly the same as the non-S model – € 900. This has a 6.73-inch 120Hz LTPO panel and SD 8+ Gen 1 chipset. cameras, Xiaomi has opted for a triple 50 MP configuration: 1 / 1.28 “main, 2x telephoto and 115 ° ultra wide angle. This can compete with the Motorola in terms of charging, its 4,600 mAh battery can take 120 W on a cable (0-100% in 19 minutes) or 50W wirelessly (0-100% in 42 minutes).

An Asus ROG Phone 6 starts at € 1,000, but that’s for a 12/256 GB drive. It works with the 8+ Gen 1 chip, of course, with an updated cooling system. Its 6.78-inch AMOLED display also beats the Motorola with a refresh rate of 165Hz. The camera is fairly basic, 50 + 13 + 5MP, but it has a large 6,000mAh battery, which is fast enough to charge. (60 W, 0-100% in 42 minutes). You also have two USB-C ports, which can be useful for accessories and just for ergonomics. As with the Motorola, you get a mostly stock Android 12 without any promises of long-term support.

The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion is a € 600 version of a great value phone. It also has a 144Hz OLED display, a 6.55-inch FHD + panel, but uses the older Snapdragon 888+ chipset. It also doesn’t surprise with its 50MP (1 / 1.55 “) or ultra-wide 13MP (no telephoto) main camera, the 68W wired-only charging 4,400mAh battery is good but not great (0 -50% in 10 minutes) We have a full review if you want to know more. One thing to note is that there is an elegant vegan leather option, for those who carry their phones without a case.

The Fusion clashes with the Galaxy S21 FE ($ 500-600) with an 888 chipset and a 6.4 “120Hz AMOLED display. The 12MP main camera is insignificant, but at least you get an 8MP 3x telephoto module. 4,500mAh battery gets Samsung’s usual 25W charging system.

Alternatively, you can pick up a Realme GT2 for under € 500. This also has the 888 chip and a 6.62 inch 120Hz AMOLED display. You also have a 50MP (1 / 1.56 “) main camera, 8MP ultra wide angle and no telephoto lens The 5,000mAh battery is on par, albeit with 65W charging support (0-100% in 33 minutes).

For around € 550 you can get a Poco F4 GT with the more powerful (if not more energy efficient) Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. You’re also offered a 6.67 “120Hz AMOLED display and 64 + 8 + 2MP camera setup. The 4,700mAh battery performs a 120W fast charge (0-100% in 17 minutes), if had it had wireless charging, it could have challenged the Edge 30 Ultra.

Finally, there’s the Motorola Edge 30 Neo, a smaller, cheaper model – starting at $ 370. Its 6.28 “OLED display drops to a 120Hz refresh rate and the power comes from a Snapdragon chipset. 695 mid-range and a 4,020mAh battery (68W fast charging) The camera setup is fairly standard, 64 + 13MP on the back, 32MP on the front.

These smaller phones are hard to find. There is the Pixel 6a, for example, which has the same footprint and a 6.1 ”display. It uses the Google Tensor chipset and, most importantly, Google’s image processing for the 12MP wide and ultra wide cameras. The battery is large (4,400 mAh), but does not know the true meaning of fast charging (18 W). Also, this is more expensive, but can be found for around € 400.

The Samsung Galaxy A53 is larger (6.5 “display, almost 7mm taller and 3.6mm wider, also weighs 34g more), but it is cheaper. The AMOLED display offers a refresh rate of 120Hz and has an Exynos 1280 chipset inside. The camera setup is similar to the Moto, 64 + 12MP (and a 5MP macro module and 5MP depth sensor). The extra footprint comes with a larger battery, 5,000mAh, but as is typical for Samsung it only supports a relatively low charging power, 25W.
