Mark Gurman of Bloomberg said in its latest Power On newsletter that Apple is stepping up testing of the M3 chip. At least one version of the new platform has been spotted with a 12-core CPU, 18-core GPU and 36GB of RAM, according to data compiled by an App Store developer.

Gurman believes Macs with the new 3nm-based chip will start arriving in late 2023 or early 2024.

The Apple M3 chip spec appears with a promising leap in performance

The new CPU will stick to six high-performance cores, while the other six will be of the energy-saving type. The increase is similar to the M1 generation versus the M2, which should hopefully be enough to boost demand. Gurman recalled that the Mac business suffered a 31% decline last quarter alone, missing analysts’ estimates.

The reporter also suggested that the M3 Pro and M3 Max will have similar gains (compared to the M1 to M2 series) and the latter will have a 14-core CPU, 40-core GPU, while the M3 Ultra could double everything, reaching a staggering 80-core graphics unit. None of that is confirmed, and we’re expecting to learn the details at WWDC, which is set to take place next month.
