According to a new report by Central WindowsMicrosoft will adopt an operating system release cycle of three years, with the next version marked for 2024. It is unclear whether it will be Windows 12 or a version number of Windows 11.

At the same time, Microsoft will increase the release of new features for existing Windows users in the market. Beginning with Windows 11 22H2 (codenamed Sun Valley 2), Microsoft introduced what it internally calls “Moments,” which allows engineers to push great functionality to existing users without the need for a major upgrade.

The major Windows update will arrive in 2024, it could be Windows 12

The “Moments” system was what allowed Microsoft to release the weather button on the taskbar in Windows 11.

Microsoft has reportedly been working on a version, codenamed Sun Valley 3 for 2023, but that has been scrapped and is now expected to be reorganized into the 2024 version.

This new way of updating Windows would allow current users to access new features faster, without having to wait for the next major version of the operating system, while allowing developers more time to test issues before release.
