Apple will be announcing its iPhone 2022 lineup next week and rumors are swirling louder than ever before the announcement. One rumor surrounding the redesigned “notch” in the display is that the two cutouts will appear as one using dead pixels from the display. The software will check when the pixels between the cutouts are lit or just plain off.

This according to an anonymous source as reported in MacRumors with corroborating rumors circulating on Chinese social media. The rumor is said to have originated from Foxconn employees involved in the production of the iPhone 14 Pro.

Apple's double-cut notch is rumored to appear as one

An invigorating report by 9to5Mac came right after stating that these areas between the cutouts will also be reserved for viewing Apple’s privacy indicators, which arrived with iOS 14. Shows when the microphone or cameras are being actively used by an app on the device. This could free up the corners of the display to fit more status icons.

According to 9to5Mac‘s source, the camera app should also have an updated layout that moves some of the controls to the top of the screen. Specifically, the flash and Live Photo button will be at the top of the status bar with other settings placed just below the cutouts.

This extended crop may later show pixels such as when watching videos or receiving notifications. This would be a less annoying solution for viewing content than the notch and still have the necessary hardware for Apple’s Face ID biometric solution.

The rumor is not expected to be taken as the truth, which will be confirmed next week at Apple’s livestream event. Apple will release four new iPhone models consisting of two 6.1-inch iPhones and two larger 6.7-inch iPhones. There will be no “mini” iPhone this year.
