We’re not there yet when it comes to under-display cameras. Current implementations lack satisfactory image quality and are far from being a good enough alternative to the conventional cropping approach.
However, Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple is moving forward with development. He says Apple will bring the first iPhones with UD selfie cameras along with UD Face ID in 2024. And the planned update is more of a marketing purpose than real technological limitations.
UD selfie cameras will always be at a disadvantage compared to regular cameras in terms of image quality. Less light enters the sensor, due to the additional layer on top. That is why the ISP and corrective algorithms are critical to combat this effect. We’ll be quite curious to see if Apple has come up with some exciting new technology to compensate for this. Unfortunately, we still have about 17 months to wait before we find out.
