Tecno introduced the new Camon 20 series earlier this month, and the flagship model in the series has a unique camera setup. It uses a collection of imaging technologies that the company has dubbed “Ultimage,” which is a combination of image sensor and AI capabilities.

The Tecno Camon 20 Premiere is the showcase of what Ultimage can do. It features RGBW camera sensors, something the company has been working on for a couple of years. Having one white subpixel instead of a second green one increases light transmission.

Also, the company has used a glass element in the lens array (1G+6P), which also helps. And finally, there’s no replacement for sensor size: the Premiere went from a 1/1.73″ sensor to a 1/1.56″, or to put it in terms of pixel size from 0, 8 µm to 1.0 µm. Remember that the surface scales quadratic, so the new pixels have 56.25% more light-gathering area.

Premiere also uses sensor-shift image stabilization instead of the optical type used in previous models. The sensor moves 5,000 times per second to correct for handshakes and other unwanted movements, creating a sharper image in the dark.

The raw camera output is sent to the “Portrait Master Algorithm”, which has been trained on 50 million photos of people with various skin colors. This allows users to take what Tecno calls the “perfect picture in one shot”.

In case you missed the announcement, the Tecno Camon 20 Premiere has a very curious camera setup. The main camera module is a 50MP RGBW sensor, as we have already mentioned. The ultra-wide-angle module uses a 108MP sensor behind its 115° lens, the highest resolution UW camera we’ve seen to date.

At the end of Tecno’s camera-centric announcement came another major reveal: the company will be among the first brands to release an Android 14 update, which will arrive first on the Camon 20 series (the phones are equipped with Android 13) .
