introduction

Sony has updated its mid-range Xperia 10 for 2023. So what has changed compared to the Xperia 10 IV? Well, the display on the Mark V has gotten slightly larger and now measures 6.1 inches instead of 6.0. According to Sony, the panel itself is also 1.5x brighter than before, which is great to see. They also added front-facing stereo speakers. And there’s the larger 48MP main camera.

Unfortunately, this covers the list of new additions to the Xperia 10 V. While it’s not much different from its predecessor, the Xperia 10 V remains a rather special device with a unique Sony “flavor”. We cannot say if it will be enough to guarantee its market success. What we can do, however, is drill down into the particulars and see what makes it work.

The specifications of the Sony Xperia 10 V at a glance:

  • Body: 155.0 x 68.0 x 8.3mm, 159g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass Victus), plastic frame, plastic back; IP65/IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 1.5m for 30min).
  • Screen: 6.10″ OLED, 1B color, HDR, 1080x2520px resolution, 21:9 aspect ratio, 449ppi; Triluminos display.
  • chipsets: Qualcomm SM6375 Snapdragon 695 5G (6nm): Octa-core (2×2.2GHz Kryo 660 Gold and 6×1.7GHz Kryo 660 Silver); Adreno 619.

  • Various: Fingerprint reader (side-mounted); stereo speakers.

To be honest, not much has changed since last year. You’re still getting a very light, thin and tall phone with a 21:9 aspect ratio, in keeping with the Sony tradition. The body is still mostly made of plastic, but retains the coveted IP65/IP68 degree of protection. The Snapdragon 695 5G is rather disappointing still at the helm of the device, and it’s still paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. The display is still only 60Hz.

The camera setup hasn’t changed drastically either, though it remains competitive with its two additional 8MP units: an ultrawide and a 2x telephoto, taken from the Xperia 10 IV. And we still have a rather large 5,000mAh battery.

Unpacking

First, though, let’s take a look at the Xperia 10V’s retail packaging. It ships in an odd two-piece box with rounded edges. The box is mostly strange in its color and texture as it is made from recycled materials. It’s not particularly difficult, which makes us wonder how well it will do its job of protecting your phone during shipping. At least there’s a cradle for the actual device inside the box, holding it snugly so it doesn’t move around.

The retail box is really lacking in terms of accessories. Our unit doesn’t even come with a USB cable—the bare minimum, so to speak. You will need to supply your own charger and anything extra like a case if you want one. The scarcity of this retail package is in stark contrast to what you get with phones from Chinese brands, so this midranger is already off to a rough start. Let’s look at the rest.
