Sharp is on time with its latest Japan-exclusive flagship smartphone: Aquos R8 and R8 Pro. Aquos R8 Pro is based on last year’s Aquos R7 with Qualcomm’s latest generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 flagship chipset .
Aquos R8 and R8 Pro
The Aquos R8 Pro gets a 6.6-inch Pro IGZO OLED screen with a resolution of 1,260 x 2,730px and a refresh rate of 240Hz. The panel also offers 10-bit color support and Dolby Vision, as well as a peak brightness of 2,000 nits.
The Aquos R8 features a 6.39-inch panel with a waterdrop notch, the same basic specs as the R8 Pro, albeit with a peak brightness of 1,300 nits.
On the back, the Aquos R8 Pro features a 47MP main camera with a 1-inch sensor co-developed with Leica, an F/1.9 aperture and a 19mm focal length. There’s a 1.9MP depth sensor to keep it company, but no ultrawide or telephoto lens. The Aquos R8 offers a 1/1.55-inch 50.3MP main sensor along with a 13MP ultrawide module.

The other interesting aspect is that the camera rings on both phones and it also acts as a passive cooler by dissipating heat away from the phones motherboards.
Both phones are equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC as well as 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. Aquos R8 Pro packs a 5,000mAh battery while Vanilla R8 has a 4,570mAh cell.
The Aquos R8 and R8 Pro are IP68 water and dust resistant and feature a microSD card slot and headphone jack. Both phones run Android 13 with 3 promised OS version updates and up to five years of security updates. The latter will depend on the carrier.
Aquos R8 is available in blue and cream colors while Aquos R8 Pro is available in black. Both phones will go on sale in Japan from July 15th.
