Samsung will increase the battery capacity of the Galaxy S23 and S23 +, according to some rumors. The vanilla phone will go up to 3,900mAh, the plus model to 4,700mAh (+200mAh in both cases). Only the S23 Ultra will retain the capacity of its predecessor, 5,000 mAh. But Samsung has come up with another way to improve battery life: Light mode.

This mode was introduced for Samsung foldables earlier this year and serves as an alternative to Standard mode. Prioritizes battery life and cold running over absolute performance.

According to IceUniverse, the decline in performance will be moderate while the reduction in energy consumption will be significant. Note that this is separate from the usual power saving mode.

Light Mode will not affect performance in games as the performance profile for them will continue to be controlled by the separate Game Booster settings as it is right now.

The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is showing promising results, so the increased performance of the new chipset could balance the slowdown caused by Light mode. That said, the 8 Gen 2 promises to be more energy efficient than the 8 Gen 1, so battery life should be better (even before taking into account the larger Galaxy S23 and S23 + batteries).

PS. the screenshot is clearly from a Galaxy Z Fold4, so we have no idea how Light Mode will actually work on a real S23.
