Apple’s development of an internal modem is not going according to plan. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple’s modem won’t be ready by spring 2025, as previously rumored.
According to the report, Apple will delay the modem to late 2025 or even early 2026. This ties in nicely with Apple’s extended modem deal with Qualcomm, currently signed through 2026.
Making your own modem is a tricky thing: currently only Qualcomm, Samsung, Huawei, MediaTek and Intel have a 5G modem.
Reports suggest that Apple’s efforts on this front are not going well and that it is currently three years behind Qualcomm, which is something of a leader. It won’t be as easy as abandoning Intel processors and developing your own ARM-based chips.
