Meta’s Quest Pro VR / MR headset has just gone official and is powered by the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 + Gen 1 chipset. Thankfully, Qualcomm itself has now posted a few more details about it.
The Snapdragon XR2 + Gen 1, which we will henceforth refer to as XR2 + for sanity reasons, features a new image processing pipeline that achieves less than 10ms latency, unlocking color video passthrough for mixed reality ( MR).
It also supports 360-degree 8K 60fps video, “simultaneous perception” technologies including head, hand and controller monitoring, 3D reconstruction, automatic room mapping, and high pixel density. The chip offers 30% improved thermal performance and 50% more sustained power than the previous generation.
Interestingly, the Meta Quest Touch Pro controllers are powered by the Snapdragon 662 platform, which allows them to track across multiple built-in positional cameras and offers ultra-low latency for the headset.
Qualcomm says several OEMs have committed to launching XR2 + powered devices later this year. So far, Snapdragon XR chips power over 60 eXtended Reality (XR) devices around the world.
