Apple has officially confirmed that it will disable blood oxygen monitoring on its Watch Ultra 2 and Series 9 smartwatches in the United States. The change applies only to new sales: Those watches won’t be able to measure SpO2 until the legal battle between Cupertino and medical technology company Masimo ends.

Current units on the market, including those already shipped to third-party resellers, will continue to function as before. Users outside of the United States will also remain unaffected.

Disabling the SpO2 sensor is a way for Apple to continue selling its new smartwatches since they would otherwise be completely banned by the United States’ International Trade Commission (ITC). However, the company failed to update the interface, so those who purchase the Watch Ultra 2 or Series 9 will still receive the blood oxygen icon. After tapping it, you will be notified that the feature is not available.

Apple no longer discloses sales data by device, but according to its latest report, 42% of its overall wearables revenue comes from North America.
