Qualcomm announced today that it has entered into a “multi-year global strategic partnership” with Manchester United, one of the best-known football clubs in the world. So Qualcomm will sponsor Manchester United, with the Snapdragon brand deal.

This is definitely interesting: Qualcomm seems to be expanding these sponsorships far and wide recently, putting the Snapdragon brand in front of as many people as possible, even though it’s not actually selling anything directly to consumers.

Qualcomm begins sponsoring Manchester United, highlighting the Snapdragon brand

Perhaps the company simply has too much money to know what to do with it. Or maybe it’s all a vanity game: Does Qualcomm want you to know about Snapdragon so you know Qualcomm is powering your favorite device? It seems a bit of a stretch.

So maybe imagine a future where people walk into a main street operator’s shop in Manchester and specifically ask for a Snapdragon phone? Sure, it could happen, given enough money and time for marketing, but … why though? As it stands, Snapdragon has hardly any real competition in the high-end Android world, so all of that seems pretty pointless.

Unless, the conspiracy hat the people in the corner wears wouldn’t say, unless Qualcomm wants to launch a Snapdragon-branded phone? No, not that, right to sell to consumers? But why would it want to do this and jeopardize relationships with its current customers, the Android phone makers?

So many questions, so few answers. Either way, Qualcomm notes that strategic collaboration (what ever happened to call a sponsorship a sponsorship?) “Will create unique events and experiences for fans at Old Trafford and around the world,” whatever that means.

In addition, Qualcomm “will alert Manchester United of planned improvements to mobile connectivity at Old Trafford, which will improve the fan experience on match days.” It looks nice enough.

Expanding the PR talk with 110, Victoria Timpson, CEO of Manchester United’s Alliances and Partnerships, said: “Snapdragon platforms will enable groundbreaking experiences for fans around the world, strengthening their engagement with the football team they love. “. How? Who knows. What’s clear is that you should expect to see a lot of Snapdragon brands in Old Trafford and maybe even player shirts next season.
