We already suspected this would be the case, but now it’s official: the Nothing (1) phone will not be available in the US. No North American carriers were on the supported list we saw yesterday when 100 limited edition units went up for auction. Here’s what the company said:
“While we would like to bring the telephone (1) to the entire community around the world, we are focusing on domestic markets, including the UK and Europe, where we have strong partnerships with leading local operators. It takes a lot to launch a smartphone as you know, from ensuring that the phone is supported by the country’s cellular technologies to partnerships with carriers and local regulations, and since we are still a young brand, we need to be strategic about it. “ said nothing in a statement a PCMag.

Verizon does not allow phones on its network that are not on its whitelist. Likewise, AT&T only enables VoLTE for selected phones. And this is effectively a ban, as without VoLTE your phone will have to switch to 3G to make a call and AT&T will shut down its 3G network in February. T-Mobile is more open, but doesn’t use all of the same bands as European carriers, so coverage will be unpredictable.
Nothing has plans to launch a smartphone in the US in the future, but it will need to have at least one major carrier on board first. Founder Carl Pei has already done so, OnePlus 6 was the first of his former company to sell in the US and Canada with the support of several (but not all) carriers.
PS. Although some units have been up for auction right now, the launch of the Nothing (1) phone is set for July 12.
