Nothing CEO Carl Pei was the co-founder of OnePlus and you can see a lot of similarities between the two companies, especially in the marketing department. Nothing has conducted a OnePlus-style teaser campaign for its next phone (1), revealing little (or big) tidbits of information here and there seemingly every other day, making sure it stays in the news cycle for weeks. That’s exactly what OnePlus did, and it turns out Nothing will apply yet another initial OnePlus strategy to its first smartphone: the invitation system.

Love it or hate it, it was undeniably unique when it made its OnePlus One debut, and the Nothing (1) phone will “initially” only be sold via invitations. You can say what you want about Carl Pei, but he’s definitely among the top marketers and hype makers in the mobile space.

Information about the invitation system comes towards the end of the video above (starting at 1:20 pm), which premiered today from Nothing. The video details the design of the phone and its manufacturing process, letting us know that recycled aluminum is used.

The invite system will apparently allow Nothing to sell its products faster as it won’t wait until it has accumulated many phones in stock to start shipping them. It will also make sure that the first people to get a phone (1) are the “community”, the “people who deserve it the most”. Once “they are happy”, the company is “more than happy to open more widely”.
