A few years ago Motorola introduced the Moto G 5G as its cheapest 5G phone, then in 2022 the sequel came, now that phone is a new model. Also new today is the latest Moto G Stylus. Both phones have seen cost cuts, which have reduced their price but also limited their features.
Moto G 5G (2023)
The Moto G 5G (2023) features sub-6GHz 5G connectivity, courtesy of a Snapdragon 480+ chipset. If you’re thinking that this isn’t particularly impressive compared to the 2020 model Snapdragon 750G or even the 2022 model Dimension 700, you’d be right.
However, this model will cost $250 when it becomes available on May 25th. For comparison, the 2022 model had an MSRP of $400. Either way, this new version will be available from Motorola.com, Best Buy and Amazon retailers, as well as carriers T-Mobile, Metro, AT&T, Boost Infinite, Boost Mobile, Cricket, Google Fi, US Cellular and Consumer Cellular.
It will also be available in Northern Canada from select retailers and couriers later this year.
Motorola Moto G 5G (2023)
The Moto G 5G (2023) pairs the SD 480+ chipset with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, as well as a microSD slot that can hold cards up to 1TB. This hardware will mostly run stock Android 13 at launch.
Like the 2022 model, this phone has a 6.5″ LCD with 1,600 x 720px (20:9) resolution. This year, however, the display will run at 120Hz, up from 90Hz. The original 2020 phone had a 6.7″ FHD+ but was never available in North America.
The phone has a water repellent design and measures 8.4mm thick and weighs 189g. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom, next to the USB-C port. This port is used for charging the 5,000mAh battery at 15W and for data transfer (USB 2.0). There are also stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support on board.
On the back is a 48MP camera (f/1.7 aperture, 0.8µm native pixels, 1.6µm after binning), plus a pair of 2MP modules, one for depth and one for stills macros. The main camera can record 1080p video at 30fps.
There’s also an 8MP (f/2.0, 1.12µm) selfie camera that can also shoot 1080p @ 30fps video. This front facing camera can also be used for face unlock, alternatively you can use the fingerprint reader.
Moto G Stylus (2023)
The Moto G Stylus (2023) is a 4G-only phone with its Helio G85 chipset. It also comes with 4GB of RAM but only half the storage at 64GB (you can still insert a microSD card up to 1TB).
The new Stylus will be available in the US on Friday (May 5) priced at $200. For comparison, the 2022 model cost $300 for a 4/128GB drive (there wasn’t a 4GB option). /64GB). Naturally, time has dropped the price of the previous model to $170. And note that the previous model launched with Android 11, this one comes with Android 13 out of the box.
Moto G Stylus (2023)
That older model has a large 6.8″ display with FHD+ resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. The newer model has a smaller 6.5″ IPS LCD with HD+ resolution only (and the same 90Hz refresh rate ), which makes it less suitable for drawing things with a stylus.
Either way, this phone also has a water-repellent design and a 5,000mAh battery with 15W charging. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack next to the USB-C port at the bottom. Like its sibling, this one has stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. The fingerprint reader is mounted on the side.
The camera setup features a 50MP main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and smaller 0.64µm pixels (1.28µm after binning). It can record 1080p video at 30fps. There’s a 2MP macro camera on the back, plus an 8MP selfie camera on the da (with 1080p @ 30fps video).
