Motorola is trying another possibility with foldables and, at first glance, it seems that the company is on the right track. Motorola is releasing two foldable clamshell Razr phones this year: the Razr 40 and the 40 Ultra (aka Razr+ in North America). The subject of this review is the pricier Ultra, which introduces some notable changes over the 2022 Razr.
It is the design that has been modified the most, and this is an important aspect as today’s leaflets are meant to appeal primarily to the design-conscious public. And before the geek in you scoffs at this, the hardware changes deserve attention. Motorola has updated the hinge, narrowing the space between the two parts of the chassis when closed; they also trimmed the main display bezels and made the crease a little less visible; finally, they added a truly usable external display.
The 3.6-inch external screen isn’t just for glancing at notifications or other contextual information, no. Motorola has worked closely with app developers, so a handful of apps are optimized to run on the cover display, including Netflix, Disney+, and Spotify. It also works as an excellent viewfinder for the main camera. However, you’ll also find a selfie cam inside.

Inside, the Razr 40 Ultra is a mix of old and new hardware. While still rocking the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, the device replaces its old display with a faster and bigger one. The primary 6.9-inch display can now run at 165Hz, while the secondary is clocked at 144Hz. Battery capacity has also increased, now 3,800mAh, but there’s no upgrade in charging speed. This year, however, the 40 Ultra gets wireless charging, which is a must-have feature in the premium segment.
The camera department also sees a small update, especially the main camera. It is no longer a Quad-Bayer and uses a standard 12MP sensor with large pixels and is paired with a large f/1.5 aperture lens.
The updated spec sheet looks promising enough, but is it enough to take on the big boys: Samsung and Huawei? After all, Samsung’s Galaxy Flip series has long been the default option for those looking for a clamshell foldable, so we’d be glad to see a worthy contender to Samsung’s hegemony this year.

The phone ships open in a standard box containing the usual user manuals and the appropriate TurboPower 30W USB-A wall charger along with a USB-C to USB-A cable for charging and data transfer. However, the charger is not included in the box for North American buyers.
