Say hello to the new Moto G series phones: Motorola just launched four G phones (and one E phone), two of which we’ll cover here, the lower-end models are in a separate post. This means that here we will see Moto G73 and G53.
A lot has changed from the Moto G72 and G52. To begin with, both new models support 5G connectivity. Although there are some changes that you may not like. Let’s take a closer look.
Moto G73
The Motorola Moto G73 comes with MediaTek’s Dimensity 930. This chipset runs its CPU at lower clocks than the Dimension 920 and the GPU is different (an Imagination design rather than Mali). However, the chip carries a sub-6GHz 5G modem and that’s a big upgrade over the Moto G72 (whose Helio G99 chipset also used the older generation technology).
The phone runs Android 13 out of the box with minor My UX tweaks. There’s only one configuration right now that has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (which is expandable, more on that in a bit).

Motorola replaced last year’s model’s P-OLED display with a 6.5-inch IPS LCD, again running at 120Hz and the same 1,080 x 2,400 px (20:9) resolution. As before, there’s a 16MP selfie camera punched into the display.
Things are different behind too. The 108MP camera is gone, in its place a 50MP sensor with fairly large 1.0µm pixels (2.0µm with 4-in-1 binning). The pixels of the old sensor were as small as possible, 0.64 µm (1.28 µm with binning).
This is definitely an update, although we would have liked to see the camera get support for 4K video capture. Anyway, the other module on the back is an 8 MP ultra wide angle with 118° field of view and auto focus, which allows it to capture macro photos as well.
The Moto G73 features a 5,000mAh battery and TurboPower 30, Motorola’s 30W charger (included in the box). Charging is done via the USB-C 2.0 port, and there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack on the side. There are also stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos on board.
As we’ve already mentioned, the G73 supports sub-6GHz 5G. It’s a dual SIM phone with a hybrid slot, which means you can have a microSD slot where the second SIM card normally goes. Added to this are Wi-Fi 5 (ac), Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and the usual positioning systems.

The body of the phone is made of plastic and has a water-repellent design. It measures 8.3mm thick and weighs 181g.
Moto G53
The Motorola Moto G53 also sports 5G support over its only 4G predecessor, though this time it’s courtesy of the Snapdragon 480+ (taking over from the Snapdragon 680). The phone can be configured with 4, 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of expandable storage.

The display isn’t like on the G52, it’s a 6.5-inch LCD with a resolution of just 720 x 1,600 px (20:9). This is a surprise to see in the mid-range and not a pleasant one, the Moto G52 had a 6.6-inch 1080p (90Hz AMOLED) display. The 16MP selfie camera is the same as the G73.
Not so on the back. The 50MP main camera uses a smaller sensor with 0.64µm pixels (1.28µm with binning). As you might expect, the camera is limited to capturing 1080p video (at just 30fps, not 60fps like the G73). Also, the 8 MP (118°) ultra-wide-angle camera lacks autofocus.
Motorola Moto G53
The Moto G53 is powered by a 5,000mAh battery with only 10W charging (which will be increased to 18W for the Latin American market). This is odd, considering the G23 (covered in the other post) has 30W TurboPower. Both the G53 and G73 have fingerprint sensors for security (as well as face unlock).

Anyway, like its sibling, this phone has a plastic shell with a water repellent design. There’s a USB-C 2.0 port and a 3.5mm jack at the bottom, plus stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos on board. This is also a dual-SIM phone with a hybrid slot, accepting microSD cards up to 1TB instead of the second SIM.
Prices and availability
The Motorola Moto G73 and Moto G53 will launch in Europe in the coming days, followed by a wider launch in Latin America and Asia thereafter.
The Moto G73 will be available for €300 in a single configuration (8/256GB). The Moto G53 will be cheaper at €250, this is with 4/128GB of memory, which is the only option currently listed on Motorola’s official website. Here are some links to Moto Germany for the G73 and G53. Moto UK has them too, but no prices yet.
