We have our first smartphone with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 under review and we are eager to show you the leap in performance offered by the new hardware platform. While we can’t talk about this particular smartphone in detail yet, no one is stopping us from looking at the benchmark scores it can produce.
Below you’ll see the top scores we’ve gotten from many of the top hardware platforms in all of our reviews.
The average numbers (not listed here for brevity) are a bit lower, so keep that in mind. These numbers represent best-case scenarios. We didn’t include averages because we only had two (best) benchmarks for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 as well – one provided by Qualcomm as a benchmark score and another that we captured ourselves using this review unit.
Along with the regular SM8550-AB model of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 below, you’ll also see the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SM8550-AC, which is the overclocked version that ships in some devices you can see here.
Let’s start with the CPU-intensive Geekbench test. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 should be 30% faster than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Unfortunately, we were unable to reach Qualcomm’s official numbers.
The performance jump we observed was still a good 22-23% in multi-core. The single core performance difference was less than stellar, at around 7-8%.
Next, GPU testing. Here, Qualcomm claims that the new Adreno 750 GPU is 25% faster than the Adreno 740 in the SD 8 Gen 2. Furthermore, it is also more power efficient and should offer 40% better raytracing.
In our off-screen testing, the new GPU was 16 percent better than the non-overclocked SD 8 Gen 2 in the OpenGL ES 3.1 test at 1440p, 13 percent better in the Vulkan test, and nearly 22 percent better in the OpenGL test ES 1080p Graphics benchmark 3.1.
We also got about a 15 percent improvement over the non-overclocked SD 8 Gen 2 in the 3D Mark Wild Life Extreme test at 1440p, which is again run off-screen.
In the 3D Mark Solar Bay test, which is a ray tracing benchmark, we saw a whopping 43.5% improvement in the performance of our Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 device.
Finally, who doesn’t love a good AnTuTu comparison chart? This composite benchmark takes into account many aspects of devices, including storage, RAM, display resolution, etc. So it’s not a great tool for comparing platforms. It is much better to compare specific devices.
In this test, our mystery review phone, which uses the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, took first place in our all-time review rankings. Cute!
So overall, it’s a great result from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. We’re seeing a net performance improvement of up to 22% in CPU and GPU performance compared to the best Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 devices we’ve ever tested.
And it’s worth noting that our test phone didn’t get excessively hot during the benchmark, just warm, which is another promising thing for the new chipset.
While the SD 8 Gen 1 model had unimpressive consistent performance and stability, the SD 8 Gen 2 improved this, and it looks like the SD 8 Gen 3 could do even better.
We will have even more information for you next week, once we have finished our stress tests and can finally reveal the identity of this test device with a full review.
