Apple is preparing to launch its first mixed reality headset next year, but a new report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the product’s arrival is delayed.
According to the shared memo, the mass shipment schedule for major components is planned for Q1 2023, but customer deliveries are delayed from Q2 to the second half of the year, citing “software issues.”
Additionally, the forecast of units shipped has been lowered from 800,000-1,200,000 to just 500,000, which is almost half of what was initially forecast.

The mass shipment schedule of components is still likely 1H23/2Q23, but due to the delayed mass shipment schedule of the final product, the Apple MR headphones shipment forecast in 2023 will likely be less than 500,000 units, which is less than the market consensus of 800,000 1,200,000 units.— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) December 4, 2022
Apple is currently expected to hold an announcement event in January 2023, and pundits are waiting to see what Cupertino will do because a huge gap between unveiling and launch could be detrimental to marketing efforts and, in turn, sales.
The delayed launch could affect the optical industry, Kuo added. Apple partners Largan, Cowell and Primax, responsible for different parts of the camera like the module or lens, are following closely because any delay could hurt their short-term financial planning.
