The Indian government has banned a new batch of apps today. The list included 14 applications, 13 of which are used exclusively for secure messaging and another which also supports the storage of photos, videos and conversations.

This time, the official reason for the ban is that the apps have been widely used in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir to spread terror and propaganda.

The full list of 14 newly banned apps:

  • cryptvisor
  • Enigma
  • Safeswiss
  • Wickrme
  • media fire
  • Root
  • Chat
  • Nandbox
  • Conion
  • IMO
  • Element
  • Second line
  • Zangi
  • He trembles

The apps have been banned in accordance with Section 69A of the Indian IT law. A government spokesman said Overground workers (people who help militants with logistics, cash or shelter) and terrorists used the listed apps to communicate with each other. Indian agencies have found that the mobile applications have no representatives in India and monitoring the activities that take place on the app is difficult.

The apps are still on Google Play and the App Store as of this writing, but are likely to be removed by the developers in the days ahead. The ban cannot prevent users who have already downloaded the app from continuing to use them, but it will crack down on any future attempts to use them via official app stores.
