The Chinese smartphone market is the largest in the world and, according to I, the steady decline trend continues throughout the third quarter of this year. Total shipments fell 11% year-over-year with 71.3 million units sold. However, the premium segment sees a modest 1.9% increase over the same period, capturing a share of 22.4%.
The top five companies selling smartphones in the country are vivo, Honor, Oppo, Apple and Xiaomi. As you can see, Apple is the only non-Chinese company on the list. But despite vivo’s impressive performance, the company’s sales have dropped by more than 20% year-on-year. Vivo’s iQOO sub-brand is seen as one of the key factors in maintaining the top spot.
Honor also sees a 9.1% drop from the same period last year, while maintaining 17.9% of the total market share. Oppo, on the other hand, was the most affected. The company lost 27.9% of its sales compared to the third quarter of 2021, but still maintains a lead over Apple with a total market share of 11.6%.
And as for Apple, it’s actually the only company in the top five with a modest 2.5% improvement in sales, mostly thanks to its iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. After all, the premium segment is experiencing a growing interest. Last but not least, Xiaomi had a 9% market share in the third quarter of 2022, losing 17.9% of its sales year-on-year.
