While it offers a longer support window right now, Google’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL aren’t covered by it since they launched before it was announced. Therefore, their software support is expected to end in November last year. Yet Google still provided updates to these devices in January and February.
The build sent in February was supposed to be the very last to be received by these phones, but Google likes to surprise, so it’s rolling out another update for the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. This is definitely the last one they will have, but it matters if you plan to use them for a few more years to come.
This is because it adds support for VoLTE roaming, which will come in handy when operators shut down their 3G networks. There are two builds coming out: SP1A.210812.016.B2 is for those using Pixel 3 or 3 XL on Telstra, Optus or Vodafone Australia, while SP1A.210812.016.C2 is for everyone else. VoLTE roaming support is likely to be literally the only thing contained in this update, so don’t expect to see the June security patches applied as well.
As is always the case with Google software implementations, this too will likely take several days to reach all the devices out there. If you have a Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL and are impatient, you can check it manually by going to Settings> System> Advanced> System Update.
