For the past three years, Google has attempted to repackage its flagship phones into A-series phones that capture the essence of the Pixel at a much more attractive price. The Google Pixel 6a even got the same custom Tensor chipset as the more expensive Pixels, sweetening the deal even further.
The Pixel 6a is particularly compact with its 6.1-inch OLED screen and much lighter at 178g (versus the Pixel 6’s 207g). It perfectly captures the design, look and feel of the more expensive Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, strategically reducing costs in places that don’t have a big impact on usability.
The Pixel 6a doesn’t have a charger in the box, a modification that came with the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Google also eliminated the headphone jack for the first time for the Pixel A series.

The Pixel 6a’s camera is the proven Sony IMX 363 sensor, the same one that was used by the Google Pixel 2. Google stopped using it only on its premium Pixels this year, so we probably shouldn’t be surprised that the 6a didn’t get it. a different sensor. And we might still see the aging sensor boost its performance when paired with Google Tensor.
The Pixel A series has historically had excellent battery life. This time around Google has slightly reduced the size of the battery, but with a smaller screen and the Tensor chip we could be in another solid run. We also hope that the 6a has addressed the thermal performance weakness we saw with the 6 and 6 Pro. But let’s start with unboxing.
Unpack the Google Pixel 6a
The Google Pixel 6a comes in a slim package that we can’t really say even covers the essentials. You won’t find a power supply in the box anymore, so the Pixel 6a comes with a SIM eject tool and 1 meter USB-C to C cable. We are also pleased to see the USB-C (male) to USB-C (female) “Quick Switch Adapter” to transfer data from another Android device or iPhone via a cable.
