The Android operating system is known for having many features, some more obscure than others, but one has been missing since the first version launched nearly 15 years ago: a separate volume slider for calls and notifications.

The line in question is

adb shell device_config sets systemui volume_separate_notification to true

and it’s time for the feature to be released, with QPR3 or Android 14 in the coming months.

The “Ring volume and notifications” slider will be split into two different sliders: one for calls only and another for notifications only. This way, users can still ignore calls without needing to mute the notification sound or vice versa: hear the calls but ignore the various chimes and chimes.

Google has updated the feature request in its issue tracker to read: “The requested feature will be available in a future build.” It is highly possible that the feature will be mentioned during I/O on May 10, where Google CEO Sundar Pichai will officially unveil Android 14 and announce the launch date.
