Primal Labs today announced a new version of its popular benchmark: Geekbench 6. The company says phones and computers are getting faster, so older methods of measuring improvements are quickly becoming obsolete.

Changes include larger photos, a larger image library for importing tests, larger and more modern PDF examples. The app is now heavier across all platforms as it includes several new tests, including background blur during video calls, photo filters in social media, and object detection for AI workloads.

Geekbench 6 comes with more real-life tests for modern devices

The new Geekbench 6 seriously reduces the focus on single-core CPU tests. Primal Labs says the number for the main core isn’t as important anymore as real-world use cases pull power from different parts of the hardware. Machine learning is also on the rise, which means that the multi-core CPU achievement has also been revamped.

The end result isn’t just adding up the performance of four different cores. The tests measure how well cores “actually share workloads in realistic workload examples.” The world of mobile technology has been mixing large and small cores for quite some time, but now desktops and laptops have caught up with the practice, making the old Geekbench unreliable.

The app also has better GPU computations with new frameworks and abstraction layers. There will be a more accurate cross-platform comparison as Primal Labs has integrated more ML acceleration instructions and smooth GPU performance across all platforms.

The Geekbench 6 app will be available for Android, Linux, Mac and Windows. It will remain free for non-commercial use and is coming to Google Play soon.
