A total of 41.7 million smartbands and smartwatches were shipped globally in the first quarter of 2022 based on Canalys data. 32 million of these were smartwatches with the product category seeing 15% growth over the same period last year. On the other side of the table, smart bands saw a 37% drop in shipments for the quarter, marking the sixth consecutive decline since the fourth quarter of 2020.
Apple shipped the largest number of smartwatches in the first quarter of 2022 with a total of 9.2 million units. Cupertino also gained 22.1% of global market share thanks to strong demand for Apple Watch Series 7. Huawei recorded 4.6 million shipments and 11% market share while Xiaomi handled 4.2 million. of shipments and a market share of 10.1%. Samsung secured fourth place with 3.4 million shipments and 8.1% market share, while Fitbit recorded 2.9 million shipments and 7% market share.

Rising inflation levels are expected to reduce consumer spending, although demand for smartwatches is said to have growth potential thanks to health benefits and activity tracking for consumers. Canalys analysts predict further drops in smartband demand with Xiaomi and Fitbit severely affected.
