Apple is rumored to be bringing OLED screens to its iPad range in the next few years and while most reports have focused on screen technology, a new article from ET News provides more details on the manufacturing of the display panel of the next generation tablet range. Samsung and LG are touted as the two leading display vendors, and both are said to be working on new OLED panels designed specifically for Apple’s upcoming 2024 iPads.

The new tip in the manufacturing process is dry etching, a process in which manufacturers use chemical gases to remove unwanted layers of material from the surface of the TFT circuit during production. This process allows the OLED panel to be thinner and lighter and will reduce the overall footprint of the tablets.

Apple is also working on developing a special coating for the display that will make the panel more durable. Apple is reportedly already internally testing the first prototype units of its OLED iPads.

The previous iPad OLED report suggests Apple will use dual-stack OLED displays that house two layers of light-emitting diodes which should result in higher brightness.
