Ever since Apple created iPadOS and separated the tablet software from the iOS phone software, updates for both have come out at the same time. But that could all change next month if a new “people with knowledge of the subject” report is accurate.

Apple apparently plans to delay the release of iPadOS 16 by about a month compared to iOS 16. The latter will be out in September as usual for a new version of iOS, while iPadOS 16 will only appear in October.

The reason? Development of the new Stage Manager multitasking system built into iPadOS 16 takes longer than expected. During the ongoing beta testing of the new software, Stage Manager was criticized by some developers for being buggy and confusing, as well as its lack of compatibility with most iPads out there.

The delayed release of iPadOS 16 will also bring it closer to the launch of new iPads, which could happen in October. Rumor has it that we will see an iPad Pro with the M2 chip and a faster entry-level iPad with a USB-C port.

For what it’s worth, Apple declined to comment, but has mentioned in the past that several features planned for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 won’t arrive in their initial releases. So either iPadOS 16 as a whole gets delayed or starts without Stage Manager which is then added in iPadOS 16.1 or something like that.
