The Apple Watch series has gradually expanded in features and finishes every year, and we will receive the latest generation Watch 9 at today’s Apple event. S9 chipset
Like the A-series chipsets for the iPhone, Apple updates the Apple Watch series with new S-series chipsets every generation. The S9 Series chip is ready to be used with the Watch 9 and is touted as the biggest upgrade from the S6 chip that powers the Watch Series 6 since 2020.
According to previous reports, the S9 chipset will be based on Apple’s 5nm A15 SoC found in the iPhone 13 series. The new chip will introduce a notable performance boost over the S8 chip which was based on the A13 SoC with notable improvements in efficiency compared to its predecessors.
Ultra-wideband U2 chip
The Watch Series 9 and the new Watch Ultra are also expected to get the new U2 Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip which is said to offer superior location accuracy. The U2 UWB chip will also be integrated into the iPhone 15 series and Vision Pro headphones.
New optical heart rate sensor
Apple Watch is a class-leading health tracker, and Apple is expected to introduce an updated optical heart rate sensor that should provide more accurate results. The first-generation Watch Series 8 and Watch Ultra used Apple’s third-generation optical HR sensor while the new Series 9 and Ultra 2 will reportedly launch with the updated fourth-generation version.
Ultra lighter watch with 3D printed parts
The first-generation Apple Watch Ultra is Cupertino’s largest (49mm case) and heaviest (61.3 grams) smartwatch to date, and rumors suggest Apple will offer a weight reduction with the new model. While we don’t get specific numbers, reports suggest that the lighter case will be a key feature of the next Watch Ultra.
We’ve also heard about Apple using 3D printed parts that should help reduce weight. Some reports also suggest that the stainless steel watch series 9 could feature 3D printed casings.
New colors and bands
As with most Apple Watch releases, we should see some new colors for the Series 9 watches. One of the rumored new options is a pink option for the aluminum version of the Watch 9. The Watch Ultra 2 is rumored is now available in a stylish black color along with silver options. As for watch straps, rumors suggest new braided and magnetic buckle options.
