Apple aims to move 25% of its production to India, the Asian country’s trade minister has revealed. During a trade conference, Piyush Goyal said that about 5-7% of Apple products are currently manufactured in India and the goal is for this number to increase fivefold.

The official did not provide any timeline and Apple did not comment on the statement.

It’s not the first time we’ve heard of such a change. Analysts had previously predicted that 25% of iPhone production would move to India by 2025, and Foxconn is reportedly ramping up its workforce at the factory just outside the city of Chennai.

The main reason Apple is moving away from China and Foxconn diversifying its production into more plants is the uncertainties surrounding COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions and geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington.
