Apple began moving some of its iPhone production from China to India in 2020 and is now planning the same for AirPods and Beats. According to Nikkei, the Cupertino-based company has already asked suppliers to move production to the South Asian country, with the aim of doubling exports by the end of March 2023.
Bloomberg reported earlier this week that iPhones, manufactured in India and shipped to Europe and the Middle East, cost $ 1 billion, and with the new move, that number could reach $ 2.5 billion by March 2023.
Analysts believe the move to India is positive as it will diversify the currently highly concentrated manufacturing base in China. Furthermore, India will use the move as a statement that it is a manufacturing force to be reckoned with and could lure other companies to shift their manufacturing.
