Not long ago the Oppo Find X2 series was among the first to get Android 11 beta, the following year Find X3 Pro was just as quick to get Android 12 beta. Their successor, the Oppo Find X5 Pro, is among the first non-Pixel devices in line to receive Android 13 beta.

The news comes from Google I / O, the search giant’s big developer event. This new version of ColorOS is a preview for developers and is based on Android 13 beta 1. It is not suitable as a daily driver and is instead intended to give developers the opportunity to prepare their apps for the next version.

Installing Developer Preview requires clearing the phone storage (so if you’re planning on doing this, make sure you back up your data first). This version also has many known issues related to the camera, connectivity (5G, Bluetooth, web browsing) and others.

This page will give you instructions on how to install the software and warnings about what could go wrong and how to get back to Android 12. You can also visit this post in the Oppo Chinese forum for more information (while the press release does not mention it appears that the Oppo foldable Find N also has a Developer Preview available).

Regular users will want to wait until the first public version of the new ColorOS is released, which will arrive soon (no specific time frame has been provided).

There is a similar story about Realme. Realme GT was one of the first to try Android 12 Beta 1, now Realme GT2 Pro gets early access to Android 13. This is also a developer preview and is not recommended for regular users.

Known issues include the need to clear internal storage, no forward upgrade path (you will need to downgrade before installing the stable version), the user interface is incomplete, some apps and features are missing, and the software is unstable. But that’s how it goes with the very first releases of a major new release. Sill, if you are a developer and want to get a head start on your work with Android 13, check this page for detailed instructions on how to upgrade (and later return to Android 12).

What does Android 13 consist of? It will improve privacy and security with features such as more granular permissions to access media files, introduce API for themed app icons, quick tile placement, per app display language setting, Bluetooth LE Audio functionality, MIDI 2.0 support on USB and more.
