Commercial 5G services are officially launched in India. The announcement will be part of the IMC (India Mobile Congress) and will be edited by PM Narendra Modi.

5G services will be launched in India on October 1st

The IMC will run from October 1 to October 4, and the big announcement of 5G will take place on October 1. The PM and the announcement of him will be part of a discussion called “Towards Advanced 5G and 6G”, so presumably a lot will be discussed about the future of technology and communication in the country.

This does not necessarily mean that users will be able to start using 5G on October 1st. It may take some time yet. Reliance Jio said it is ready with its standalone 5G service, which is based on the new 5G infrastructure instead of existing 4G towers. However, users will likely still need to purchase a new 5G SIM card. Airtel is also expected to launch its 5G services around the same time as Jio, and Vodafone Idea’s 5G rollout is still a bit uncertain in terms of timing.

Either way, the timing fits well with India’s 75-year independence celebrations, which took place in August. We expect to see attractive 5G tie-in launch offers and promotions. Overall, the country’s analysts speculate that prices for the new 5G services are likely to be similar and not higher than existing 4G tariffs. At least initially, as the first goal for carriers will be the inclusion of new users.
