Neversong is an adventure game with a strong emphasis on psychological horror. Players play the role of Peet, a 12-year-old boy who wakes up from a coma to find that all the adults are missing and his girlfriend is missing. However, players will quickly see that the game is filled with fascinating characters and strangely catchy music. The initial impression is quite disarming in a positive sense.
Peet’s interactions with Neversong’s colorful cast are often entertaining. The gamer probably won’t find himself getting attached to these guys, but they’re still good for a laugh or two. They also present a great contrast to the often horrifying things happening in the background. Crazed adults, killer monster parents, and haunting mysteries await all players who enter the Redwind Village setting.
This gives Neversong a distinct vibe akin to IT by Stephen King and Netflix Stranger things. Anyone who loves these stories will most likely be pleased with Neversong’s presentation. This is largely due to Dr. Smile, the game’s antagonist monster. This creepy nightmare man is often lurking just out of sight until he makes his presence known. It will definitely set off some alarm bells for anyone afraid of Pennywise the Clown.
However, a great experience and an intriguing storyline are dwarfed a little by the ending. Neversong’s climax is unfortunately predictable and devoid of any kind of emotional impact. This is extremely disappointing, as the game seems to be hiding something significant behind it all the time. Unfortunately, he simply never follows that expectation.
