If there’s one word that comes to mind when playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, it’s “ambitious”.

There are so many moving parts and organic systems at play when it comes to Rockstar’s swan song for the PS2 trilogy. I was amazed at how little the developers chose to compromise when it came to creating such a big world on 2004 hardware.

I am even more impressed with how well ordered the whole package is. San Andreas is fun, provocative, enriching, engaging and still a joy to play.

History

Carl “CJ” Johnson returns to the fictional west coast state of San Andreas after his mother is murdered. Once there, he rejoins the Grove Street Families gang and gets involved in gang wars in preparation for the city of Los Santos.

Working with corrupt police officers and old gang members, CJ’s life is intertwined with the dangerous streets he was so eager to leave behind.

Like any Grand Theft Auto story, San Andreas tells its story with a pleasant mix of pathos and stupidity. The intro promises a touching story of redemption for the main protagonist, but it won’t be long before CJ returns to steal burgers and spray paint the walls of Los Santos.

This is not to say that there is no emotional depth to these characters. A few twists and turns really saddened me because of how likable the main cast is. You can expect betrayals and murders along with the silly scenarios of San Andreas. And I was invested until the electrifying climax.
