Game

Technically speaking, Far Cry 5’s gameplay is incredibly well finished and easy to play, with a few open world bugs here and there. Anyone familiar with the series will feel right at home when sneaking, shooting, driving or flying.

While there are some subtle gameplay improvements instilled into the reliable formula, the game doesn’t add much to the series. What’s new, however, is incredibly useful and fun to experiment with.

For example, Far Cry 5 features fellow characters that you can play with. These companions, or Guns for Hire, each have great character qualities and are actually useful for a variety of situations.

When you upgrade your skills, you will also be able to bring more rental guns with you. Some of these complement each other very well. For example, there’s the adorable dog Boomer, who can instantly mark enemies for you from a distance. Add Jess Black, who can confidently take out any foe with her trusty bow and some distance. Together, these two can almost break down most cult compounds when used correctly.

Speaking of cult compounds, the typical side missions from previous Far Cry games are back. These include the release of compounds, the rescue of hostages, the explosion of enemy structures and other basic secondary content of the series. But you no longer have to climb any towers to lift the fog of war off the map. This is a major quality of life improvement and makes the game so much better.

To flow

Play flow is an important balance to maintain to keep the player interested. Unfortunately, the first few hours of Far Cry 5 lost me a little.

Hope County is divided into three distinct regions, each ruled by a member of the Seed family. You can tackle these regions in any order you like, but I chose to tackle John Seed’s recommended region first.

Holland Valley is a beautiful region and a great starting area to showcase Hope County imagery. The content in the region is somewhat lacking in enthusiasm or interest, unfortunately. Sure, there are some extraordinary moments with secondary characters, but nothing really grabbed me early in the game.

Fortunately, all of that changed in the other two regions where the game took off big and kept me busy until the credits rolled up.
