Fight

Combat is a great example of this. Of all the MMOs I’ve played, Black Desert feels the most skilled in its fights. The title has already received acclaim for the combat on PC. It translates incredibly well into a traditional controller on Xbox One. It’s all about action rather than point and click, making the fighting even more immersive. The moves are mapped to the shoulder and face buttons, allowing you to quickly use combos by pressing several at the same time.

What is striking is how intuitive this system is. Getting PC titles to work properly on consoles without a keyboard and mouse has been a problem for years. But Black Desert’s gameplay makes a controller a perfect alternative that works just as well. Even without a real tutorial, it’s easy to get to grips with combat simply through trial and error. The combination mechanic also keeps the combat refreshing, with the huge number of combos allowing for a wide variety of attacks.

In PvP guild battles, the combat stands out even more. The quick and responsive nature means these great encounters are an absolute joy to go through. They are essentially large battles where different guilds fight for control of an area. It’s a nice way to add some strategy to the mix. You have to work effectively with your fellow guild members to be successful.

Black Desert supports exploration above all else. You are left to do your thing with no real guidance as to where you need to go or what you should do. It might seem like it would lead you to wander aimlessly. But there is so much to do in Black Desert that this never becomes a problem. Everything from fishing to trading is a possibility. Things like mounts need to be tamed in the wild rather than bought. The endless stream of missions will also keep you busy. You won’t find yourself with nothing to do.
