When Doom was released in 2016, it gave the first person shooter genre a huge kick forward. Suddenly, the franchise became relevant again and spearheaded the modernization of shooters. Doom Eternal followed in March of this year and pushed that work forward effortlessly.
In fact, few have a bad word to say about the sequel. So it shouldn’t be a big surprise that the DLC for the game has been developed. The Ancient Gods – Part One turns out to be as great as the base game, but doubles up on the challenging gameplay.
History
The story in The Ancient Gods – Part One continues straight from the main game. However, there is no need to play the main campaign as the DLC can be accessed separately. But, just like Doom Eternal, the expansion doesn’t have a particularly compelling narrative. The Doom series has never really needed a storyline to be successful. The franchise is all about gameplay rather than story, with the action driving the player forward. This is definitely still the case in The Ancient Gods – Part One.
Arguably the best bits of DLC history come when it embraces the stupidity of the world. For example, there is a great time when the player can fight a shark. While it doesn’t exactly make sense, the bizarre event grabs your attention. The DLC also features more moments where Doom Slayer meets ordinary humans, something that always leads to laughter. These characters are all completely terrified of the protagonist and that makes some scenes interesting.
For most people, the story will be little more than a way to move on to the next place. Almost every cutscene is less than a minute long, and there’s really no need to follow what’s going on. Those involved in the story will be somewhat disappointed. This is because the DLC ends on a huge cliffhanger, without giving a real sense of conclusion to what happened before.
