Released in 2008, BioShock is a modern day classic. The story is compelling and the world is engaging. Even though the gameplay has aged, it remains fun. Plus, the setting of the underwater city of Rapture is unforgettable.

BioShock features a great cast of characters. Well-written, varied and memorable friends and foes populate Rapture. The player interacts with these people as they charge towards a shocking twist that is openly discussed to this day.

Simply put, BioShock is a perfect example of how great storytelling can be in the interactive medium.

History

At the beginning of BioShock, you find yourself playing the quiet character, Jack. The story found in the game isn’t exactly about Jack, however. The action focuses more on the character of the ambitious Andrew Ryan and the characters surrounding the man.

As the sole survivor of an accident, you seek refuge in a mysterious lighthouse in the middle of the ocean. After an investigation, the player finds himself carried away to the beautiful underwater city of Rapture.

However, you will soon find that this ambitious dream is far from a perfect place. Ecstasy is in chaos and its corridors are infested with splicers. Splicers are crazy, violent and desperate drug addicts always looking for a substance known as Adam. Even worse, a bloody civil war is also raging inside the lonely corridors of the city.

Ultimately, BioShock’s story and setting are the factors that propel it into the classics category. The characters are varied, interesting and compelling in their personal stories and motivations. These little side stories often come into play in the larger narrative in a seamless way. This gives the illusion that the world is alive and populated with characters whose actions influence the story.
