Rockstar’s 2008 release of its hugely popular action-adventure series, Grand Theft Auto IV isn’t actually the fourth installment in the franchise. In the years following Grand Theft Auto III, Rockstar released Vice City and San Andreas.

Grand Theft Auto IV was built with a completely new engine and designed specifically for the next generation of consoles. This meant that many players were expecting a distinct leap from previous iterations.

History

Grand Theft Auto IV does something different when it comes to its protagonist. It features Eastern European Niko Bellic as the main character that the player takes control of.

He arrives in Liberty City to start a new life in the United States and meet his cousin Roman. What follows is an immersive narrative that shows how the American dream doesn’t work for everyone.

It turns out Roman has gotten involved with some shady people and things soon start to unravel. You then begin to get involved in the underworld of Liberty City as Niko is drawn into events.

The first cinematic of Grand Theft Auto IV immerses you in the world. Considering the original release was in 2008, the title is an incredibly cinematic experience. It ensures that you are absorbed in the story.

As you would expect from a Rockstar game, the characters are all interesting individuals who provoke a variety of emotions. There are also moments of interactivity, where you can make decisions that actually affect the story. It’s another first for the series, but it helps get you involved even more.
