Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 is the sequel to the 2016 RTS set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Its predecessor is not only a great strategy game, but also one of the best titles in the franchise, a difficult order considering how many games are set in that series.
So, this sequel has a lot to live up to when considering the success of the first title. The question is whether it can get better or will it fail at the first hurdle.
History
As previously mentioned, Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 takes place in the tabletop universe of Warhammer 40,000. However, it’s not the traditional tabletop experience that most players will be familiar with.
Rather than using single units on the ground, it focuses on gigantic space battles. Naval warfare offers the opportunity for large-scale battles involving thousands of ships. In the case of Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2, players don’t just watch the battles unfold from a distance. You can get involved in the action up close and personally, seeing the devastation happening firsthand.
Those unfamiliar with the series’ lore may not fully understand each reference. However, the overall narrative is still easy enough to follow. The story begins at a pivotal event in Warhammer 40,000 history. The fall of Cadia marks the moment when a huge, seemingly impregnable planet was destroyed by Abbadon.
From here, the story branches out into three campaigns that tie into the events of the first game. Unlike many other RTS games, this story does a good job of getting you involved and investing in the characters.
