Multiplayer madness
Even if you buy Battleblock Theater for single player mode only, you’ll get your money’s worth. You can easily spend 30 hours or more trying to win each stage and bonus stage and maximize your possible score on each level.
However, the value of the game increases dramatically when you bring a friend. At the most basic level, for example, you can play the campaign together, making some puzzles a little easier and the whole experience more rewarding.
The game also includes an Arena mode where you and up to three other players can challenge it in a variety of modes. This includes familiar concepts like King of the Hill and Capture the Flag (more like “capture the soul” in this case) and more adventurous ideas like “Color the World” and “Capture the Horse”).
Are all multiplayer modes equally fun? The honest answer is “No”. But getting so much multiplayer goodness on top of a long and challenging campaign is absolutely fantastic.
Final verdict
Ultimately, I highly recommend Battleblock Theater. If you are expecting in-depth combat or a Castle Crashers sequel, you will be disappointed. Everyone else will be thrilled to discover a surprisingly addictive puzzle platformer that presents a lot of fun and challenges for all types of players.
